I have been seeing so many ads recently for AI and how it promises to:

"Write your chapter 1 of your thesis in 3 minutes!" "Create a study by having AI show you what's new and doing it for you!" "Let AI do the thinking for you!"

This is a TERRIFYING affront to academic thought, philosophical doubt, and critical thinking.

As an AI power user, AI is embedded into pretty much everything I do. The difference? My AI stack are TOOLS to help AMPLIFY my work — not replace it.

I am still reading all the articles... ...making all handwritten or dictated notes... ...drawing my own conclusions and creating new ideas.

AI helps organize and structure it, but the thinking? All. me.

Some considerations for you if you are thinking of using AI and don't know where to start

  1. Make sure you actually know what you're talking about before using your preferred AI tool(s). If you don't understand your topic area, AI will not be able to fill the synthesis and novelty dissertations and theses are needing. It can be used to work through a topic, but the understanding is all you, the human.

  2. This tool can be very powerful, BUT use it to help you organize your thoughts on the topic, grab notes and themes from your articles, and help you structure an outline for your work which you HEAVILY edit to ensure the info is correct, relevant, and in your own voice.

  3. Turn on dictation on whatever word document you use to write, grab your outline you made in step 2, and start working through your paper. Make the notes of the citations along the way.

  4. Go through your paper and EDIT, EDIT, EDIT!!!!! These AI tools are so powerful, but don't think this makes it an easy-mode task. You still need to know your stuff well and READ the materials you are referencing.

Don't let AI do the critical thinking for you. Use it as a cognitive partner to help clarify YOUR thoughts and not amplify the AI's.
